Residential Life

A welcome note from Lillian Penson Hall Warden

By Konrad 05 Sep 2019

Dear Resident,

Welcome to Lillian Penson Hall 2019/20

Welcome to Lillian Penson Hall, which houses 300 full-time students studying at the University of London. We are a mixture of first-year undergraduates, taught postgraduates (MA, MSc, MBA, LLM, for example), and PhD students representing the various Colleges and Institutes of the University of London. The Hall is named after the first woman to serve as Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, Dame Lillian Margery Penson, DBE (1896-1963).

Sunday 15 September Arrival, Welcome Receptions, and Welcome Party

Sunday 15 September is designated the common arrival date across all seven intercollegiate halls of the University of London. The Reception is open 24 hours each day so you can arrive at any time. Weekend brunch is served 11.00-12.30; dinner is served 18.00-19.30 every day. (Breakfast is served 08.00-09.30 Monday to Friday.)

There is a Welcome Reception on Sunday 15 September (20.00-21.00 in the Common Room). The Welcome Reception is an opportunity to meet fellow residents and LPH’s five Resident Advisors, who are also full-time students. There is a second Welcome Reception on Sunday 22 September (20.00-21.00 in the Common Room). Yes, there is a Welcome Party at the end of September (details to follow). There will also be intercollegiate halls events (details to follow).

Resident Advisors and the LPH Club Committee

A Club Committee of residents – formed in early October – will assist the Resident Advisors in organizing social, sporting, and cultural activities for the benefit of residents.

We tend to hold various events using the Common Room. Monthly Coffee and Cake Receptions – usually the first Sunday of each month – are organized by the Resident Advisors for all residents. The first Coffee and Cake Reception is held on Sunday 6 October 15.00-17.00.

LPH Facebook

You will receive an invitation to join the LPH 2019/20 Facebook group. The Resident Advisors are, with the Warden’s approval and support, administrators and moderators.

New to London or the UK

Transport for London https://tfl.gov.uk/is helpful; it also indicates routes by foot. If you are new to the UK and/or living in a large city you may also wish to access the Metropolitan Police’s crime prevention advice https://www.met.police.uk/crime-prevention/.

Warden

The role of Warden complements the Personal Tutor and/or Supervisor you have for your academic studies. It is one of personal welfare with the additional responsibilities of residential life. My role residential position as Warden is tied to my full-time academic appointment at Royal Holloway, University of London in the School of Business and Management where I am also Admissions Tutor and Chair of the Sub-board of Examiners.
