How to... do your laundry
Laundry is quite easily the least exciting household chore.
There are aisles and aisles of laundry detergent in the supermarket and about a million settings on washing machines. It can be difficult to understand what is going on but clean clothes are essential!
So, instead of carting your clothes back home or constantly picking dirty clothes out of your washing basket, here is a foolproof guide to laundry...
Step 1: Buy laundry supplies
Let's get the hardest part over with. You have two kinds of laundry detergent: bio and non-bio. This will be written on the box. Bio detergent is for white items, smelly sports clothing and stained items. Non-bio is for everything else e.g. day-to-day clothes and sensitive skin. So, you will predominantly use non-bio detergent.
Laundry detergent comes in powders, liquid, capsules and tablets. The easiest option is to buy capsules. They keep your clothes fresh, soft and smelling amazing.
Step 2: Separate your laundry into colours
Separate all of your dirty clothing into two piles; lights and darks. Remove any delicate fabrics, such as wool or silk. If you have any new items of clothing that are in bright colours or black, put them to one side as well. Wash them by hand a few times to avoid the dye leaking onto other items.
Step 3: Put your clothes in the washing machine.
You're almost there. Now, look at all those buttons and symbols. Keep it simple - go for 30 or 40 degrees in the synthetic or mixed category. Push the "ON" button and off you go. If you are washing delicate items, make sure to select the "delicate" setting.
Step 4: Retrieve clothes and dry them
It's easiest to use a dryer whilst living in halls of residence. If you do opt to use a dryer, select 140-150 degrees for most clothing. Do not put any jumpers or delicate items in the dryer - they will shrink!
