Life In London

Packing for life in the UK

By bzgeorge 28 Aug 2019

Packing your life into a couple of suitcases can seem like an impossible task.

Between clothing, tech, toiletries and home comforts, your suitcase will barely close. However, lucky for you, the UK has lots of stores to fulfil your every need so that you don't have to cart your whole life across the world.

When you are packing, there are two things to remember:

  1. You don't need everything, you can buy most of it here.
  2. You will need more clothes that will keep you warm rather than summer clothes.

Clothing:

  • Raincoat - It rains A LOT in England. Be prepared for the wet weather with a waterproof coat or umbrella.
  • Warm winter coat - While it doesn't get below -10 degrees in the winter, it is still quite cold. Be sure to have a puffer jacket or parka on hand.
  • Light jacket - Pack a denim jacket or light coat for the spring and autumn seasons. It never gets super hot in the UK, so it's always good to have a light cover-up available.
  • Trousers, jeans and skirts with tights - Always opt for more winter clothes, than summer clothes. You can always wear a t-shirt with jeans, or take off your tights under skirts.
  • One pair of shorts and a couple summer outfits - You may be arriving in August, but the warm weather will not last for long. If the UK has a heatwave, you can always buy some more summer clothes at your local Primark.
  • Scarves, hats and gloves - Most of your time on campus will be spent trying to stay warm. Make sure you're prepared for it!
  • Jumpers and hoodies - Lots of comfy clothes for lounging around your student halls flat.
  • T-shirts, shirts and blouses - You need a few fancy tops/ shirts for going out on the evenings. The rest can be casual t-shirts and other lecture appropriate clothing.
  • Boots and trainers - Stay comfortable! No need for high heels. Pack some winter boots and trainers for if you decide to pop to the campus gym. Shoes are heavy and difficult to travel with - you can always visit a shopping centre if you need more.

Tech

  • Phone - You can get your UK sim card when you arrive.
  • Laptop - You will need a laptop for taking lecture notes and writing essays. Worst comes to worst, you will be able to hire a laptop on campus.
  • UK adapter -  You will need a UK plug adapter so that you can charge all of your electrical appliances.

Household things

  • Photos from home - You can either print these off at home or the UK. Having a few friendly faces on the walls of your halls room will make a big difference.
  • Bedding -  There is no need to carry duvet sets, cushions and fairylights in your luggage. You can buy all of this at Wilko and Primark for cheap prices.
  • Kitchen appliances - The same applies for pots, pans and cutlery. Buy it at your local supermarket - besides you won't be legally allowed to take knives on a plane anyways!

Looks like you'll have MANY excuses for a shopping trip when you arrive!
