Foundation Day is the annual celebration of the grant of the Royal Charter to the University of London. It is held in the early evening at the Senate House on Malet Street.

Foundation Day 2025 will be on Wednesday 19th November, 17:30 to 22:00.

The evening begins with the presentation of honorary degrees to a handful of distinguished academic, political, scientific, and literary figures by the Chancellor of the University, HRH The Princess Royal (Princess Anne). There are interesting speeches made before the presentation of each honorary degree, outlining the achievements of the person receiving the award.

Following the degree ceremony, there is a drinks reception where Her Royal Highness likes to meet many of the students present. This year, FIVE of the TEN Connaught Hall students will be selected randomly to meet Her Royal Highness.

The reception includes free drinks (including wine and, usually, a specially selected cocktail), hot and cold finger food, and an impressive dessert selection. Everyone who attends can enjoy the refreshments.

The Warden has 10 free tickets for Connaught Hall residents to attend Foundation Day. If you would like to go, register your interest here before midday on Tuesday 14th October. Tickets will be allocated on a “first-come, first-served” basis.

Please only request a ticket if you are certain that you will be able to attend for the full event, 17:30-22:00. Royal protocol means guests are not allowed to arrive late, nor to leave before Her Royal Highness.

Once allocated, tickets cannot be transferred to anyone else. This is for royal security reasons.

Dress code: Business wear / smart day dress. A jacket and tie is required for men.
