Handel Mansions: Introducing Food Waste Recycling

Posted 3 days ago

Find out more about recycling your food waste.

All Handel Mansions flats are being provided with a food waste caddy by 1st April 2026, so you will be able to recycle your food waste.

Each flat will be responsible for emptying their food waste caddy.

Please share/assign the responsibility with your flatmates, keep it clean, and do not let it get too full before taking the bag outside.

You can use any bags in your food waste caddy that fit, but we recommend compostable caddy liners such as “Waitrose 20 Compostable Caddy Liners”.

What can you put in your Food Waste Recycling Bin?

Waste food has a big impact on climate change, but recycling inedible food waste transforms it into energy, and you’d be amazed at the good use it can be put to.

  • Did you know, for instance, that nine recycled banana peels could generate enough energy to fully charge a laptop?
  • Or that a caddy load of food waste could generate enough electricity to power a home for almost an hour, or a guitar amp for almost 2½ hours?

When you put it like that, why wouldn’t you recycle your unwanted food waste!

You can read more about how food waste recycling works here.

Avoiding food waste in the first place is the best thing to do. Whilst some food waste in unavoidable, e.g. eggshells, some peelings, bones – there is a lot you can do to plan your meals to not waste edible food.
