These are just some of the changes we've made based on your feedback in our last survey...
General
"The laundry machines can be unreliable"
>>> Washers and dryers are being replaced in spring 2025 with new machines and an upgraded payment system
"Residents aren't aware of the wellbeing support available"
>>> Our Wellbeing team went on a dinner time roadshow, plus we've expanded our @WellatUoL Instagram and CampusLife information
"There isn't a very strong sense of community"
>>> Residential Life events now better consider the diversity of residents in halls and are more inclusive to better foster inclusion
All catered halls
Dissatisfaction with menu options in catered halls
>>> We are working with the catering team to develop improved menus, which went live in the first week of April – look out for more information in your dining room, with themed menus every night and improved coordination of main and side dishes
College Hall
Residents want more opportunities to voice concerns and suggest improvements
>>> We held a Residents’ Town Hall and will add regular sessions to the student calendar next academic year.
The elevators break down often
>>> We’ve completed key lift upgrades, and breakdowns are already less frequent. We’re continuing work to improve reliability even further over the next 6 months.
We had several hot water outages early in the year
>>> We’ve improved hot water reliability with targeted maintenance, reducing outages and making showers more dependable.
Connaught Hall
Noise issues at night
>>> We identified that unauthorised overnight guests are often involved where there are late night noise issues. We are investing in a new tech-based system for guest management that will enable us to better identify unauthorised guests and take appropriate action.
The internet’s slow, pages don’t load — it’s really frustrating
>>> Our technical team identified "packet loss" as the issue, and resolved it. They also resolved access point issues and completed service checks — everything’s now running smoothly.
Bathrooms and pantries are often left in a poor state by other residents
>>> We’ve introduced more frequent checks and reminded residents how keeping shared spaces clean benefits everyone. Also, look out soon for new waste disposal facilities on most floors, aiming to reduce the burden on the pantries for "last resort" waste disposal.
Eleanor Rosa House
I have not found it easy to make friends
>>> We have planned for student led skills-based events which will give an opportunity for people to share their passion with a wider audience whilst receiving money for leading the event.
Laundry machines and room are often dirty
>>> We have reset the cleaning process with a new cleaning supervisor and allocated a two specific staff to clean daily. We have also introduced a collection removal of lost and found on 1st and 15th of each month to ensure there is no excess of clothes being left to build up.
Maintenance requests take too long to be attended to
>>> We have introduced two daily catch ups to review the jobs reported in the morning and completed over night and once again at the end of the day to review the jobs from today and contact students if any return visits may need to take place and update them for any delays in completion.
Garden Halls
Common room areas are left dirty
>>> We have increased our cleaning schedule for all communal areas to ensure that common rooms are clean and well maintained.
The study room is not a pleasant environment
>>> We have renovated the 3C and 3D study room area to increase seating, and make for a more enjoyable study area.
We do not have enough sports events
>>> We have started weekly yoga and kickboxing classes (twice a week yoga and once a week kickboxing) - we have also started to rent weekly football pitches for inter-halls competitions.
Handel Mansions
Maintenance requests take too long to be attended to
>>> Dedicated handyman to attend every Tuesday to prioritise maintenance issues.
I haven’t met anyone in my hall
>>> More events added to calendar for inclusivity, most popular being the coffee & smoothie mornings, allowing individuals to customise their own beverages while meeting fellow residents.
My room was not cleaned properly for my arrival
>>> We will add extra staff members to support with room cleaning checks before arrivals.
International Hall
Social facilities need updating
>>> Music rooms refurbished and new furniture added in the Conservatory and Common Room
Insufficient social events for self-catered/postgrad residents
>>> A series of seven events named IH Olympics were introduced which were primarily targeted at self-catered /postgrad residents.
Nutford House
Insufficient Awareness of who staff are
>>> RAs on duty wear tops when on duty to raise awareness and announce names in meetings
Absence of recognition or mental health programmes
>>> Communications and events have highlighted the importance of mental health wellbeing
Issues with washing machines
>>> Replacement of all machines planned by Easter
