Measles Alert (London outbreak)

Posted 15 hours ago

What you need to know

London is experiencing a measles outbreak. As of 19 February 2026, there had been been 130 confirmed cases across England, with 34 new cases reported in just one week. The outbreak is centred in North London, mostly in unvaccinated children. Some have required hospital admission.

Young adults are the group most at risk, making this particularly relevant for university students. Measles can be more severe in adults than children.

Recognising Measles

Early Symptoms (Days 1-4)

The first signs resemble a severe cold:

  • High fever
  • Persistent cough
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Feeling generally unwell

Key Diagnostic Sign: Koplik Spots

2-4 days after initial symptoms, look inside your mouth for tiny white spots with bluish centres on a red background. These "Koplik spots" are virtually diagnostic of measles.

The Characteristic Rash

3-5 days after first symptoms, a distinctive rash appears:

  • Day 1: Face and hairline – Flat red spots
  • Day 2: Neck and upper trunk – Spreading downward
  • Day 3-4: Arms, legs, feet – May join together

When the rash appears, fever may spike above 40°C.

Get Vaccinated If You're Not Fully Protected

Who Needs MMR Vaccination?

The NHS specifically recommends 2 doses of the MMR vaccine for university students due to outbreaks of mumps and measles at universities. Most people will have been vaccinated during childhood. Check with your family or ask your GP to check their records. If you were not fully vaccinated, then now is a good time to make sure you do get the vaccine.

Getting the Vaccine

  • It's free on the NHS for students who haven't had 2 doses previously
  • You can ask your GP for the vaccine even if you missed it in childhood
  • Two doses are needed for full protection, given at least one month apart
  • Safe to have even if you've already had some protection
