Exam mornings can feel overwhelming, and we know students can often pressure themselves right before an exam. But, taking a step back and taking things slow in the morning can help ease your mind and anxiety.
We've put together a calm and slow morning routine if you need that extra support the morning of an exam to take a step back and remind yourself it's all okay.
Wake up and hydrate βοΈ
As soon as that annoying sound known as your alarm goes off, sit yourself up. Lying back down afterwards is a danger of falling asleep again! If you sit up and give yourself a minute to process the world and whatever weird dream you just had, you'll wake up faster. Then, go drink some water.
Pro tip: fill your water bottle up before bed and put it in the fridge. The cold water in the morning is very refreshing.
Sensory morning boost π΅
Morning silence can be deafening, especially if you take a long time to wake up, so put on your favourite podcast or music while making your bed. It'll offer a small sense of achievement for the day. And it's great to have in the background while you make a tea or coffee if you have one in the morning.
Quick skincare π
For this, you don't have to go into an in-depth skincare routine. It's the morning of exams, you'll want to keep it slow and simple. Wash your face, apply your moisturiser, and let yourself feel refreshed.
Mindful breakfast π
Make sure you have a healthy breakfast, something comforting but nothing that will cause a mid-morning energy crash. Things like oats, berries, yoghurt, or avocado toast are good fuel to start your day, and don't make you feel like you're missing your bed too much.
No-stress review (optional) π
Instead of intense cramming on the morning of, do a light review of flashcards or just start talking to yourself about the content while you're finishing your morning hot drink. Doing this can relieve some of the pressure and boost your memory.
Get ready and pack π
Comfy is the go-to choice for an exam morning. Not pyjama comfy, but just enough that you're relaxed, and it can actually be a good anxiety reliever. If you have a favourite t-shirt or pair of joggers, wear them. Make sure your laptop is charged the night before (if you need it) and pack your essentials:
- Student ID/Card
- Stationery in a clear case (and calculator if needed)
- Water bottle
- Small snack to have afterwards
Have a stroll on campus πΆββοΈ
Take a short walk to where your exam is taking place to get some fresh air and sunshine. That small bit of serotonin can set you up for the day. Put on some headphones, continue your playlist from earlier and remind yourself it'll all be okay - you got this, just do your best!
There isn't a perfect morning routine - it's just about ensuring you feel prepared without the stress of perfectionism. Remember to stay calm and have a quiet morning to yourself. All you can do is your best and take care of yourself afterwards β€οΈ
There's lots of exam season support in halls, so don't hesitate to seek it out if you need it.
