CV writing for summer jobs

Everything you need to know

Have you seen a summer job you'd like to apply for, but then realised you have no idea how to start writing your CV? Don't worry, we've got you!

As a university student, your main focus should be on creating a clear, one-page document that shows off your education and skills, as well as any relevant part-time or volunteer experience.

Here is an easy guide to get you started on your CV:

Contact details 📱

  • Name
  • Phone number
  • Professional/personal email
  • Your location (if the job you'd like to apply for is in the university area, use your halls address)

Personal statement 📝

This is usually the part where many people struggle. Writing about yourself and your experience can be a tricky thing, you don't want to underplay yourself and your achievements, however, you don't want to sound like you're overplaying yourself either.

The good thing is that all you need to include in this part is a 3-4 sentence introduction summarising who you are, what you're studying and why you'd be great for the role.

Who you are:

Your current year, your degree subject, university and your core positive traits.

What you offer:

Your top relevant skills, backed up by your university degree or previous experience.

Your goal:

The specific role you want and how you intend to add value to this workplace.

I am a proactive second-year Law student at the University of London with a strong track record of reliability and clear communication. Through my time at university, I have developed exceptional time-management skills by successfully balancing academic deadlines and volunteering at events. I am eager to secure a summer receptionist position to provide excellent customer service and support the team during the peak summer season.

Education 🎓

Start with your most recent education and work your way back to when you first started school. Include degree titles, expected grades and relevant modules.

University of London

Digital and Social Media Marketing

Sept 2025-current

Expected Grade: 2:1

Leeds Sixth Form

Sept 2022-July 2025

Grades: Media (9), Psychology (6), Art (8), Spanish (7)

Key skills 🧠

Highlight 4-5 skills:

  • Communication
  • Time management
  • Teamwork
  • Customer Service
  • Data Analysis
  • Language skills

Work experience 💼

List jobs in reverse chronological order (like you did with the education section). Focus on your achievements and relevant skills rather than your basic duties.

Hobbies & interests 🏌️‍♀️

This part is optional on your CV, but it can be a great way to show your personality if you're applying for jobs online rather than in-person. It's also great for showcasing teamwork, or, if you don't have much work experience, it can be a good section to add.

Proofreading your CV is crucial!

The last thing you want to do is spend all your time writing the perfect CV only for it to be spoiled by grammar and spelling errors. If an employer spots any spelling mistakes, they are most likely going to put your CV aside and move on to the next. So, don't forget to double-check what you've written and use tools like Grammarly to help while you're writing. And ALWAYS export and send your CV as a PDF.

Now it's your turn ✍️

If you're applying for jobs in a student area, there may be a lot of other applicants, so make sure to keep applying while you're waiting for a response. However, having a great CV can help push you to be a top candidate. If you don't know where to start, try contacting your SU about any vacancies on campus.
