Here’s our selection of apps that will help you make the most of your time in the capital once you first arrive and just continue to live life as a UoL student and official London resident...
1. Citymapper
Yes, Google Maps will usually have an answer for you, but if you want to use a bus, Citymapper will alert you where to get off, give you disruptions updates and store your favourite stops, lines and buses. They also offer a new service that is somewhere between a taxi and a bus service, definitely worth checking out if you're living in Central London.
2. Trainline
This is for your far, far-away adventures into the UK (also works in many other European countries). You’ll be able to check times and prices of train and bus tickets and for some trains you’ll be able to store your ticket on the phone rather than picking it up from the station.
3. UNiDAYS/StudentBeans
These apps offer you access to hundreds of student deals. To register, you’ll need your university email address in order to get verified as a student; but once you’ve enrolled as a UoL student, there are LOTS of discounts to use. With at least 10% off at all major high street chains and online retailers, we advice using responsibly!
4. Just Eat/UberEats/Deliveroo
Fancy something special for dinner tonight? Not a problem! Just make sure you’re waiting at the reception to collect your order to save the time (and patience) of your accommodation staff. Most of the delivery guys will try to call you anyway, but by tracking them on the app, you know how far away they are.
5. Shpock
This is a location-based app that lets you advertise items that you’d like to sell and explore what people in your area are selling. Please be careful when you use it. If you want to arrange a pickup of an item, make sure you’re meeting in a public place during the day. The payment can be made via PayPal but be aware that there’s a hefty commission of this service.
6. Meetup
Meetup offers you access to local groups of like-minded people who enjoy doing the thing you like – organised runs, walks, conferences, outdoor cinemas, socials and much more. Most of it is totally FREE, give it a try and experience what it’s like living like a local!
