Being a student in London usually means choosing between a decent meal and a social life, but your culture fix doesn't have to be the thing that breaks your bank. Whilst the West End has a reputation for eye-watering ticket prices, it's actually one of the most accessible theatres for young people. We've narrowed down the best ways to secure your seats without the stress.

1. The National Theatre

London's National Theatre is one of the UK's most prominent theatres. They regularly offer significant discounts for students and youths, making it easier for you to get out and join in on London's performing arts culture:

  • 16-25 tickets: If you're aged between 16 and 25, you can register for free to access tickets for £10 or less on almost all performances at the South Bank.
  • Friday Rush: Every Friday at 1pm, the National Theatre releases £10 tickets for shows in the following week.
  • Bonus: Students can get 15% off food and drinks if they show their student ID card at The Understudy Bar.

2. The Young Vic

The Young Vic, being a registered charity, is known for its 'low-cost' arts, making it the perfect spot for students to enjoy a night out. They offer £12 tickets for every production to full-time students and people aged 25 and under. All you need is your student ID, and they'll handle the rest.

3. Royal Court Theatre

Royal Court loves to support ambitious playwrights and empower new and diverse actors across its stage. It's brilliant if you like new, niche performances.

  • Student/25 or under: their ticket prices vary depending on the day, but the youth discount usually ranges from £15 to £20
  • £15 Mondays: Monday tickets at the Royal Court have been legendary since 1979, where every Monday, all tickets are just £15.
  • Standing tickets: 90 minutes before each Jerwood Theatre Downstairs performance, a small number of standing tickets are released for just 10p! You can only access them in person and in cash; it's fab.

4. Shakespeare's Globe

Looking for that last-minute way to step into one of Shakespeare's best-loved plays up close and personal? The Globe's got you covered:

  • £5 Rush: these tickets give you the chance to access their legendary £5 Groundling tickets closer to the day of performances - even for sold-out shows.
  • £5 standing: Every Friday at 11am, the Glob releases a limited number of £5 standing tickets for performances in the following week. These tickets are only available online and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so get yours quickly!

5. Royal Shakespeare Company

The RSC is a world-renowned theatre company that aims to make theatre more accessible for everyone. For students (or aged 16-25), you can experience RSC theatre for just £10. You can book online or in person, but just remember to bring your student ID on the night of the performance.

Remember, always treat your student ID like a VIP pass and start experiencing London the cheaper way.
