Getting ready to come back to university

Posted 1 day ago

Our top tips for a smooth return after the break

Whether your sleep schedule is all over the place or you simply don't feel prepared to dive back into lectures, here's a simple reset plan to help you get organised and excited again.

1. Do all of the little 'life admin' bits first

Put any procrastinating to the side and do the quick 2-minute jobs you have been putting off. Simple things like:

  • Check your university emails
  • Find your first week timetable
  • Make note of any deadlines
  • Look over any group chats

You'll be surprised at how good you can feel after such small tasks.

2. Fix your sleep

Getting back into your university sleep schedule won't happen over night, which is why it's a good idea to start making gradual changes before your first day back.

Try shifting your bedtime earlier by 30 minutes a night for 3-4 nights, so your body naturally starts feeling tired before 2am.

3. Plan your first three meals (include a personal comfort meal)

Food is a great way to lift your spirits and help you feel less homesick when you're back – not to mention that it'll get you back into the swing of cooking for yourself.

By planning ahead, you can avoid spending lots of money from day one and get a mini food shop in before you get too busy.

4. Reset your room in under an hour

You want your room to feel welcoming, comfortable and study-ready. This calls for a quick clean and tidy around, here's a little list to get you started:

  • Wipe all the surfaces
  • Take the bins out
  • Do any laundry
  • Put on fresh bedding
  • Get rid of any unnecessary clutter

5. Do one social thing early

Whether you already feel more socially settled than term one or you're still searching for your crowd, it's worth scheduling in an activity where you're around others who are going through the same thing. Think things like:

  • Meeting a friend for coffee or going on a walk on your first day back
  • Plan an activity with your flatmates
  • Going to a society taster session
  • Attending a halls event

But make sure you don't socially burn yourself out, you can always say no to plans you're not in the mood for.

You don’t need to feel “fully back” on day one. Start small, get the basics sorted, then build momentum.
