A bit of time, some easy adjustments, and a few clever tricks can help you make your room feel more like home.
Settling in takes time
If you’re not sleeping well straight away, it’s probably down to being in a new environment. Whether it’s the size of the room, the mattress, or simply not being your usual bed, it’s completely normal to feel a bit unsettled. Give yourself time — your body and mind will gradually adjust.
Quick comfort upgrades
Still not sleeping well after a few nights? Try these simple fixes:
- Mattress topper: A cost-effective way to instantly add extra comfort and support if your mattress feels too firm or too soft. You can even take it with you to future rooms.
- Extra bedding: Layer up with blankets or a thicker duvet. A little extra warmth can make a big difference, especially if your room runs cooler at night.
- Pillows & cushions: The right pillows can transform your sleep. Add a couple more for support or comfort, whether you’re lying down or lounging.
When to flag a problem
If your bed or mattress feels genuinely faulty or uncomfortable, let your halls manager know. They’ll check it over and, if needed, arrange a replacement. (Bringing your mattress from home isn’t allowed, and you’d have to store the old one anyway.)
Make it feel like yours
Sleep isn’t just about the bed. Personalising your space can make it feel more relaxing. Add fairy lights, a favourite throw, or posters to give your room warmth and character. The more it feels like your own space, the easier it’ll be to unwind.
