Leaving halls for Winter break?

Posted 2 days ago

Here's your easy departure checklist 📋

If you're heading out of halls for the holidays, there's a few things you should do before you go – nobody wants to come back to a messy, smelly flat!

Whether you're the first, last or only person to leave your flat, you have a responsibility to help keep it a nice, clean environment for everyone. Here's our handy checklist to get you started:

✅ Clean and tidy the flat

Your bedroom, bathroom and shared living spaces should be cleaned and tidied. If you're the first person leaving a shared flat, still make sure to do your part in helping keep the areas tidy before you head out.

✅ Clear out the fridge

Don't forget about your food! You don't want to come back to mouldy and out-of-date food after a few weeks away. Check the fresh ingredients you have in your fridge and cupboards a week or two before you plan to leave and plan meals around these.

Still have food leftover? If you have flatmates and friends staying in halls for longer, offer it to them before throwing it in the bin.

✅ Take out the bins

Check your bedroom, bathroom and kitchen bins are empty so your flat doesn't start to smell while you're gone. Make sure to use the correct bins for different types of waste so they can be disposed of properly too.

✅ Switch off

This can be one of the easiest things to forget, but it's really important to help save energy while you're gone.

  • Turn off all lights
  • Switch off your electronics
  • Don't leave anything on standby (laptops, TV etc.)
  • Unplug chargers, desk lamps, kettles etc.
  • Report any faults or issues

✅ Shut and lock everything

Keep your space safe, secure and warm over the Winter break by double-checking all of your windows are shut and locking anything you need to. This is the last step before you leave so it's important to make sure you have done this, especially if you're the last person to leave in a shared flat.

Follow these steps to make sure you come back to a nice, clean flat in the new year.

Have a wonderful Winter break! ❄️
