An extra hour in bed? Yes please!

Posted 7 hours ago

The clocks go back this Sunday! Here's what you need to know

The clocks are going back this weekend! On Sunday 25 October, the clocks will turn back by one hour, meaning an extra hour in bed and the official end of British Summer Time.

But while an extra hour of sleep sounds pretty good, the change also means darker evenings and a bit of an adjustment to your daily routine.

What happens when the clocks go back?

At 2am on Sunday morning, the clocks will go back to 1am. So, if you're planning a Saturday night out, bear that in mind!

The change means it'll be lighter earlier in the mornings, but the sun will also set an hour earlier by the clock. With winter approaching, we'll continue to see fewer hours of daylight too.

Make the most of the daylight

With the sun setting earlier, you might find yourself heading to lectures in the morning and getting home when it's already dark.

Try to get outside during daylight hours where you can, even if it's just a quick walk between lectures or heading out for lunch. A bit of natural light can help with your mood, energy levels and sleep routine.

Keep your sleep routine on track

You might be gaining an extra hour, but your body clock can still take a few days to adjust.

Try to stick to your usual sleeping and waking times, avoid spending too long scrolling before bed and get some natural light in the morning to help your body settle into the change.

Look after yourself as the evenings get darker

The shorter days can sometimes affect how you're feeling, particularly if you're spending more time indoors.

Make time for things you enjoy, keep in touch with friends and try to get outside when you can. If you're finding the darker months difficult, remember there's support available at university.

When will the clocks change again?

We'll be back to British Summer Time on Sunday 28 March 2027, when the clocks go forward by one hour and the evenings start getting lighter again.

For now, enjoy that extra hour in bed this Sunday and don't forget to check any clocks that won't update automatically!
