Eid al-Fitr is a special occasion for Muslims and is a time for celebration with family and loved ones. It marks the end of Ramadan and can last for up to 3 days.
When is it?
Eid al-Fitr is expected to fall on either 19th or 20th March, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.
What does 'Eid al-Fitr' mean?
The word Eid translates to "the festival of breaking the fast", marking the end of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast from dawn until dusk. It's a day of joy and celebration for fulfilling their duties to Allah by abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours.
How is it celebrated?
Eid is a time for celebration with family and loved ones. Most of all, it is a period of rest and good tidings!
- Pray Eid Prayer: Every Muslim is encouraged to pray Eid prayer with their fellow Muslim community to thank Allah.
- Take a different route to and from Eid prayer: It is the Sunnah of the Prophet to travel to the Eid prayer using one route and return home using a different direction.
- Wear your best clothes and perfume: This is a day that all are encouraged to wear their best clothes, smell good and gather together in community to bring in the celebration.
- Share gifts and good tidings.
Everyone shares hugs with their family and friends and greets them with "Eid Mubarak", meaning "blessed festival" in Arabic.
What is Zakat al-Fitr?
Between sunset on the last day of fasting and before Eid prayer the next morning, Muslims with an income are obligated to give a charitable donation - Zakat al-Fitr. This donation is meant to cover the costs of one's meal.
If you don't celebrate Eid don't worry. Understanding other people's cultures and traditions is how we bring everyone together.
