Start practising for Shrove Tuesday

Pancakes are cheap, quick and ideal for student life! With Shrove Tuesday on its way, it's time to get practising your best flips, topping combinations and win over the crown for 'Best Chef'.

No fancy equipment, no long prep - just good food in under 10 minutes.

1. The Classic Pancakes (The Safe Option)

The classic. The go-to. The one that everyone knows.

Ingredients:

  • 190g of all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 300ml of milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tbsp of melted butter

Method:

  1. Mix the dry ingredients and the wet ones in two separate bowls. Then combine them both.
  2. Lightly grease the frying pan with a small amount of oil or butter.
  3. Heat the pan over a medium heat and pour 1/4 of the pancake mix in.
  4. Cook until small bubbles begin to form on top, and then flip (this is the exciting part).
  5. Continue cooking the other side until golden brown, and repeat with the rest of the batter.

Best served with: maple or golden syrup, Nutella or lemon juice and sugar. 

2. Banana Pancakes (Low Effort and Still Delicious)

If you're craving something more fruity or just can't be bothered to carry as many ingredients back from the shop, these banana pancakes could be calling you.

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium eggs
  • 1 banana
  • A pinch of baking powder
  • A splash of vanilla extract (optional)

Method:

  1. Mash the banana in a bowl until it resembles a thick puree.
  2. Stir in the 2 eggs (beaten), baking powder and vanilla extract.
  3. Lightly grease the frying pan with a small amount of oil or butter. Heat the pan over medium heat.
  4. Using half the batter, spoon in 2 pancakes, cook 1-2 minutes per side and repeat with the remaining mix.

Best served with: maple syrup, honey, peanut butter or fruit.

3. Vegan Pancakes (Surprisingly Simple)

For an alternative option, these vegan pancakes are truly spectacular - and you can't tell the difference!

Ingredients:

  • 75g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp vegan yoghurt (this is the key ingredient)
  • 60ml plant-based milk
  • 2 tsp sugar
