Lunar New Year is about fresh starts, good food and celebrating with people around you. Lots of different countries and cultures celebrate it, each with their own traditions. Here are some affordable ways to celebrate in halls with your friends or flatmates.
1. Decorate your kitchen or living room
Get creative by making red paper lanterns or firecracker tubes with your flatmates. It's a great activity to get everyone together for some quality time, and a good way to unwind after a long week at uni.
2. Cook a meal together
Many traditional dishes such as dumplings, whole fish and spring rolls symbolise prosperity, wealth and good fortune. Food is a great way to bond and share your different cultures β so why not try this easy spring roll recipeπ
3. Have a themed move night
Some suggestions include: Jackie Chan's Panda Plan, From Vegus to Macau, Turning Red or even dip into your childhood favourites like Mulan and Kung Fu Panda.
4. Exchange red envelopes
Typically, red envelopes are a gift symbolising good luck, so why not write your flatmates and friends notes to wish them luck and happiness for the year ahead.
Whether it's decorating your flat or sharing food with friends, making an evening of it can make the Lunar New Year feel just as meaningful - even away from home.
