Here's our top tips on coping with study anxiety

They were always going to come at some point, and sometimes it can feel like they have snuck up too quickly. If you're feeling overwhelmed about your first round of coursework or exams, you're not alone!

It's totally normal to feel this way, and there's plenty you can do to help calm your nerves and get into the zone.

Take a deep breath 😮‍💨

It's easy to get caught up in the stress of deadlines, but remember that university is a learning curve and your results don't define you. The key to tackling assignments is to break things down and take things step by step, and day by day.

Trust that you're capable – you wouldn't be here if you weren't!

Plan your time, don't panic 🗓️

One of the best ways to calm anxiety is by creating a solid plan:

  1. Start by noting down your deadlines and exam dates in a calendar or planner
  2. Break down each assignment or essay into smaller, manageable tasks
  3. Set achievable deadlines to do these broken down tasks

From researching to writing a rough draft, making a bigger task feel smaller can help you take it one step at a time. Don't forget to schedule in breaks, your brain needs rest too!

Don't leave it until the last minute ⏰

Don't let your procrastination win! Starting early can make all the difference. Even if it's just brainstorming ideas, getting a head start will give you more time to refine your work and reduce pressure as deadlines approach.

If you're stuck at any point, try not to stress. You can always revisit your work after a break and come back with fresh eyes.

Seek support when you need it 🫶

It's OK to ask for help if you're struggling. You can reach out to your professors, halls management teams, wardens and more for guidance.

And don't be afraid to get feedback on your work, it's all part of the process and will help improve your skills.

Use the resources you have 📚

Your library and online databases are your best friends during this time! Make the most of these resources while you can, and give yourself plenty of time to search for articles, books and other references that can help support your writings.

Also the library space in general can be a great resource as it's designed to help you study and focus.

Look after yourself 😌

Take care of your mental and physical health by getting enough sleep, eating well, staying active and taking breaks whenever you need them. It's important to remember that you're not just a student, you're a person with needs too.

If you're feeling anxious, try some relaxation techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness or simply get some fresh air.

You've got this!
