Fire safety in halls

What you need to know

At the University of London, your safety is a top priority, and understanding fire safety procedures is crucial. Here’s everything you need to know to stay safe in the event of a fire alarm or if you discover a fire.

If you hear the fire alarm

  1. Use the shortest escape route: Follow the green exit signs to the nearest safe exit.
  2. Close doors and windows behind you: Do not lock doors or windows as you leave, to help prevent the spread of fire.
  3. Meet at the assembly point: Ensure you are dressed appropriately and wearing suitable footwear. Head to the designated assembly point.
  4. What NOT to do: Don’t take personal risks. Don’t stop to pick up belongings. Don’t wait for lifts. Don’t wait for friends or neighbours. Don’t re-enter the building until you’re authorised.

If you discover a fire

  1. Raise the alarm: Press the nearest fire alarm call point to alert others.
  2. Call the fire service: Dial 999 immediately or call reception, who will contact the fire service on your behalf.
  3. Follow the evacuation steps: Evacuate following the instructions above.
  4. Do not tackle the fire yourself: Your safety is the priority; let the professionals handle the fire.

Fire safety equipment in halls

  • Smoke detectors: Every room, flat, and communal area is equipped with smoke detectors, which are regularly tested. Avoid covering smoke detectors, as it can trigger false alarms and may lead to serious disciplinary action.
  • Corridors: Keep corridors clear to allow easy access to fire exits and firefighting equipment. Any obstruction can hinder evacuation.

Fire extinguishers and fire blankets

  • Fire extinguishers: While fire extinguishers are provided, we strongly recommend you evacuate the building immediately and inform a staff member of the situation.
  • Fire blankets: Each kitchen and pantry has a fire blanket. To use it, pull the tabs to release it and cover the flames. Always inform a staff member afterwards so the blanket can be replaced.

Fire drills and sounder tests

  • Fire drills: Fire drills are conducted periodically. During these drills, staff will check that everyone has evacuated safely. Your prompt exit through the nearest route is required.

Tampering with fire safety equipment: Tampering with fire safety equipment is illegal and could lead to immediate expulsion from the hall.

Personal responsibility

  • Minimise fire risks: Store flammable liquids away from heat sources, and avoid placing items such as towels or linen near electrical appliances. Prohibited items like cookers and candles will be confiscated if found in your room or common areas.
  • Know your exits: Familiarise yourself with the location of fire exits and extinguishers, and keep fire doors clear at all times.

Electrical safety

  • Responsibility: Ensure that any electrical equipment you bring into the hall is EU-approved or British Standard kite-marked.
  • Electrical supply: The electrical supply to your room is 230 Volts AC, and you should not interfere with electrical circuits.
  • Extension leads: Use fused, surge-protected extension leads and avoid overloading them to prevent potential fire hazards.
  • E-Cigarettes: While e-cigarettes are not allowed for use in halls, charging them is permitted as long as you follow the necessary safety precautions.

Stay informed, follow these guidelines, and always prioritise your safety and the safety of those around you. Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility!
